about this RV renovation
Type of RV: 2007 Heartland Sundance 2800 BH
Renovated by: @whimsicalwheels / Timeline: 4 Weeks / Budget: $6k
A little over a year ago, the Johnson family uprooted and started over in a new state. While looking for a place to call home, they temporarily lived in an RV with their three kids and used their 10 years of construction and design experience to renovate it for their family of 5. Shaina enjoyed the experience so much that she started renovating RVs as a creative outlet that would allow her to still be at home with her children.
Today we’re peeking inside the 2007 Heartland fifth wheel she recently renovated with moody deep colors. The interior is filled with rich layers that make it feel modern and cozy. This RV is sold, but be sure to follow Shaina on Instagram, so you don’t miss out on her next RV flip (she’s also available for client renos and virtual design consulting!).
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO RENOVATE RV’S?
I have a background in construction and design. We relocated our family in 2021 and lived in an RV for a while. I started renovating our own and discovered that it was not only an outlet for my creative side, but also something that other people enjoy too!
WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE THIS 2007 Heartland Sundance TO RENOVATE?
The layout made it feel very open. It also had lots of storage which is always a bonus.
WAS THIS RV RENOVATION INSPIRED BY ANYTHING OR ANYONE SPECIFIC?
I just enjoy the moody deep colors while still making it feel calming and clean.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR DECORATING STYLE?
Generally it leans more vintage traditional with a little modern mixed in. I’ve been loving the collected Parisian style lately as well.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE ASPECT OF INTERIOR DESIGN?
Getting to find a space that normally would be overlooked, and turning it into something that is both useful and beautiful.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE PLACES TO SOURCE PRODUCTS AND DECOR?
I looooove a good thrift shop. I have a local flea market/antique mall that I regularly go to. But I also utilize online places when I can’t find exactly what I need.
What’s the most meaningful or splurge-worthy item you incorporated into the RV interior?
I really like to put in quartz or granite countertops. It may seem odd but it really changes the interior to feel like a home. I also like to put in new upgraded mattresses because…comfort. 🙂
What was most challenging about this fifth wheel renovation?
This one wasn’t too bad! I guess the custom cabinetry in the living area with the caning was probably the most labor intensive. But it was so fun!
What project made the most difference?
Paint and new flooring always make an interior feel brand new. But I also really love those added details like the trim on the doors that make it feel like a higher end home.
Most asked about product sources:
I get a lot of questions about paint color and where I source my furniture. I haven’t set up an Amazon store front yet but it’s in the works! (The green paint is Cascades from Sherwin Williams)
Do you take on custom rv renovation projects or offer design consulting?
I have done custom designs for clients! And I also currently have a couple consultations going for people who are tackling a new project.
“I’m a stay at home mom of three. In 2021, we relocated our family and lived in an RV for a while. I have a background in design and construction, so I started upgrading and renovating our RV. From there, it sort of snowballed into a full-blown business since so many people were interested in my designs. It’s a great way for me to make money from home and scratch that creative itch. I love turning RVs into little homes that you normally wouldn’t be able to find.”
