about this RV renovation

Type of RV: 1985 Fleetwood Terry 29R

Renovated by: @darlintrailers / Budget: $10,000 in materials / Timeline: 10 Weeks

Ron and Shayna, the husband and wife duo behind Darlin’ Trailers, are known for creating camper interiors that are pretty and practical. Today we’re peeking inside an 80’s camper renovation inspired by the California Coast, and affectionately named “The Malibu.”

With a budget of $10k for materials and a timeline of 10 weeks, they completely transformed this travel trailer. Not only did they flip the kitchen/living room layout, but they included clever storage solutions throughout.

What inspired you to renovate RV’s?

As full-time RVers, we quickly learned that our idea of function, comfort and style couldn’t be found on the lot of an RV dealer. So we endeavored to create something that uniquely fit our needs. What we discovered was that we fell in love with the whole process of RV renovation and began to do it for others.

What made you choose this specific travel trailer to renovate?

We loved that throwback mid-80s feel the outside had. We knew that if we loved this cool vintage vibe, someone else would too.

How would you describe your decorating style?

Our style is fresh, earthy, and minimalistic. We incorporate the timeless colors and textures found in nature and love to add architectural interest where we can.

Was this renovation inspired by anything or anyone specific?

This travel trailer was affectionately named “The Malibu,” inspired by the natural textures and golden light that can only be found along the California coast.

“Multi-function is everything in tiny spaces. This Norden table from IKEA is the Perfect solution for workspace & having “proper” family dinners. You can have it all in a small space! … and did you peep the drawer storage it has too?!.”

What’s your favorite aspect of interior design?

My favorite aspect of interior design is creating beautiful spaces that function well for whom the space was designed.

What are your favorite places to source products and decor?

We source many of our decor items from major retailers like Amazon, IKEA, Walmart, At Home, etc…

What project made the most difference?

Flipping the kitchen and the living room gave so much more space for both rooms.

Do you have a favorite RV destination?

We favor national and state parks. They are always beautiful, clean, offer many amenities, and are affordable.

All of the design elements used in this travel trailer renovation are included in this style guide.

Do you take on custom renovation projects or offer design consulting?

We do! We have done travel trailers to big 5th wheels to vintage Airstreams to Class A rigs.

What piece of advice would you give someone about to begin an RV renovation?

We advise people to be prepared to find water damage. Well-meaning people sell their RVs saying, “It’s never leaked.” But the truth is that it isn’t “if” it will happen, but rather “when.” Being prepared to find water damage and repair it helps to not feel disappointed or discouraged.
