about this RV renovation

Type of RV: 2001 New Vision 38 ft Fifth Wheel

Renovated by: Brittany Smith / Budget: $5-7k

Today we’re featuring a young family that turned a stressful living situation into an opportunity for change. Their story (which you can read about below) is one of inspiration and encouragement. It reminds us that creative solutions are available as long as we are willing to open up our hearts and minds. It also reminds me of the quote by Gabby Bernstein, “Obstacles are detours in the right direction.”

Their fifth wheel renovation is welcoming and beautiful – a far cry from where it was when they brought it home. And the addition of holiday decor makes this one cozy Christmas camper that is sure to inspire!

Tell us a little about yourself and who you share your RV with.

I’m a wife and mama. We are 24 years old, live in Texas, and have our whole lives! I’m a stay-at-home mama, and my hubby is a mechanic, and he’s been doing that his whole life! He and his dad own a shop. We have a 3-year-old daughter who turns 4 in May! We also have 2 fur babies, which are large breeds and it still never feels crammed in here with the 5 of us, lol. It’s so spacious!

What inspired you to experience #RVlife?

So we had just moved into a new home back at the end of October 2021. They never said anything about no dogs, yet we had our one dog at the time. So once we moved in, they found out and said he had to go or we’d have to move out, and we couldn’t live without our baby. We really didn’t want to look for another place since we had just moved from our old house to a new one! We were so done with moving over the years, so I was thinking of something we could move into but not buy a home because we financially weren’t ready for that, even though we always wanted to. So I thought of a camper! We can buy it cheap and fix it up!

So the very next day, we started looking. My hubby’s dad knew a guy, and he gave us a deal! I traded my car (I can’t drive for several years now due to health issues, and we have his truck and bike) and also paid 2k cash, so that was an amazing deal! So we acted fast on it, and within a week we literally got the RV and moved out of our new house, which was definitely spontaneous, but we knew what we wanted and just went for it! We are so happy not to be moving around! I definitely looked up renovated ones before purchasing one to make sure they could be cute, lol, and I was so inspired!! I loved how others were making them look!! Campers were new to us, and it’s crazy how trendy they’ve become! Especially this past year!

Do you have any favorite Christmas traditions?

Baking Christmas cookies, watching Christmas movies, decorating for Christmas, etc. I’m literally obsessed with Christmas!!! It’s my fav time of year ever since I was a little girl!!!!

How long did the renovation take?

We purchased it in December of 2021, and we moved in mid-February once the damage was fixed, and the floors and paint were done, etc. We’ve continued finishing it off while living in it! So a few months for the main reno, but really it’s been all year long! Especially all the wood trim and accents. We just keep adding and perfecting the RV.

How would you describe your decorating style?

Modern and moody, for sure. I love rustic too, like wood tones and accents and lots of warmth. I am obsessed with deer skulls, antlers, cows, longhorns, etc. I’ve got several of those in our home! I love the camel leather color and black – it’s everywhere in my home, and it’s all matching!

What are your favorite places to source products and decor?

Amazon is where we do most of our shopping, lol. Obsessed with it! Love target too and hobby lobby!

What do you love most about your RV?

I love that we own our home because, for our whole lives, we have rented and moved houses a lot. So now we have a forever stable home, and we can take it with us if need be! I love how cozy yet spacious it is! I also love the financial freedom that comes with it! Definitely saving money.

What piece of advice would you give someone about to start an RV renovation?

Just go for it! We had no experience going into it, and we’re young and live paycheck to paycheck, so if we can do it, anyone can! It’s stressful at times, but you’ll get through it, and it’ll be the most rewarding thing ever. It’s seriously the best feeling.
